About Mr Alam

Mr Safdar Alam received his degree of Doctor of Medicine from the Latvian Medical Academy in 1999. He then went on to complete his resident training in General Ophthalmology and received his post-graduate degree in 2005. He then joined the NHS where he began working as a full-time member of staff at the Birch Hill Hospital Ophthalmology Department. Here he was actively involved in all clinical activities within general ophthalmology, including a specialist interest in diabetic and medical retina.

In 2009, Mr Alam joined North Devon District Hospital as a Speciality Doctor in Ophthalmology. Here he had the opportunity to advance his skillset by playing a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of eye disease. He was also an active participant in the training of junior doctors within the department and worked with other specialist doctors throughout the region on clinical governance and research meetings with a focus on improving patient care and experience.

Mr Alam’s main focus throughout his extensive career has always remained medical retina. He completed a Medical Retina Fellowship from the renowned Royal Liverpool Teaching Hospital in 2014. Here he trained in all advanced specialist clinical aspects of the medical retina and cataract surgery and worked closely with the Senior Medical Retina Team.
